WELCOME
To our VERY special choir...
Cairdeas: Kilkenny Parkinson's Choir is on a mission to uplift and enhance the lives of people with Parkinson's, their families and friends. We do this by coming together as a choir every week at the St. Patrick's Parish Centre, Loughboy, Kilkenny. During our two hour session we sing, laugh and chat. Together we make an amazing sound and through the tireless creativity and positivity of our choir director Ann Moylan, we challenge ourselves to build on whatever abilities we possess. A lot of our members have never been in a choir before and there are absolutely no auditions. Anyone with Parkinson's disease is automatically welcome as a member and we encourage their family and friends to join too.
Challenging yourself: We get huge compliments from the people who have seen us perform but the lovely thing about our choir is that no matter how confident or ambitious you are about singing, there is a place for you. Our choir director believes anyone can sing and access the joy of music. All of members are encouraged to work within their comfort zone. You don't need a background in music, only a willingness to enjoy yourself and join us in whatever way you can.
Social Outlet: People with Parkinson's often retreat from social situations and many of our members have found that the choir is as much about making friends as it is about singing. About half of our members have Parkinson's and this provides a great chance to meet with other who truly understand what is being experienced. It provides an opportunity to learn from each other and relax. As a group we sometimes arrange social events, with no singing involved.
Strengthen Your Voice: There is plenty of research into the benefits of group singing for people with Parkinson's but we see the it's impact first hand. Parkinson's often reduces the strength of the voice and many of our members (and their doctors) have noticed improvements since coming to sing with us.
Performance: We sometimes like to put on performances. Partly to spread the word about what people with Parkinson's can achieve but also as a challenge to ourselves. Again, all members are free to contribute in any way they are comfortable with, and if the idea of getting on stage is not one you relish, do not let that put you off coming and singing with us on a Wednesday.
Interested?
The best way to find out about what we do is to come and visit us during one of our Wednesday sessions. It's a good idea to let us know that you are coming so get in touch by...
